Week 8 postings- Reflections

This week’s chapter on IPv6 was actually more interesting than I expected. Before reading it, I had heard of IPv6 before but never really understood why it was created or why it matters so much. The chapter explained that IPv4 addresses are running out because there are so many devices connected to the internet now. IPv6 was designed to solve that problem by creating a much larger number of possible IP addresses.

One thing that stood out to me was how long IPv6 addresses are compared to IPv4. At first the addresses looked really confusing because they use hexadecimal numbers and colons instead of the normal decimal format I’m used to seeing. After looking at examples and practicing a little, it started making more sense. I also learned that IPv6 improves network efficiency and security compared to IPv4, which is important since networks continue to grow every year.

I thought it was interesting how IPv6 can automatically configure addresses without needing as much manual setup. That seems really useful for businesses and large networks with a lot of devices. The chapter also made me realize how much work goes into keeping the internet running smoothly behind the scenes.
